About Marije
Hi! My name is Marije.
My love for music began at an early age. I was still playing the recorder when I first heard the French horn and I was instantly hooked. My recorder teacher told my parents that the horn was one of the most difficult instruments to learn, but also said I was far too stubborn not to let me try. Together, they predicted I’d give it up within a year.
They were wrong.
Fast forward 20 years: I’ve earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the conservatories in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, studied with incredible teachers and performed in orchestras, ensembles, major concert halls, festivals and TV shows.
I followed my dream with focus and determination, aiming to become an orchestral musician and share the music I love with the world.
My student years were a time of growth, not just musically but personally as well. Early in my education, it became clear that I needed to improve my breath control. This challenge led me to something unexpected: my first yoga class.
My first yoga class
I began attending yoga classes specifically for musicians. At first, I was stiff and struggled to deepen my breath. Even though the initial sessions were challenging, I noticed that after each class, especially after meditation, I felt lighter, more grounded and more present.
Over time, yoga not only improved my flexibility but also deepened my connection to my body and breath. With regular practice, I saw significant improvements in my playing and overall well-being. My breath became more controlled and my body felt more open and balanced, both on and off the stage.
From yoga student to yoga teacher
After taking regular yoga classes for five years, I decided to deepen my practice and began the teacher training at Integrale Yoga Rotterdam. I completed the Basic Hatha Yoga training, followed by Yoga Therapy, Sound Healing and a Wellness Massage course. Additionally, I took a specialized breath course and completed further classes to gain a deeper understanding of the philosophical teachings of Integrale Yoga.
Not long after graduating from my basic teacher training, I was invited to start teaching at the same school where I had studied and been a student for years. It was a full-circle moment and a chance to start combining everything I had learned.
I now teach regular Hatha yoga classes and meditation and I also guide students in the teacher training program that I once completed myself.
New dream
I’ve let go of the dream of becoming a full-time orchestral musician. These days, I play projects that light me up and teach music as a brass teacher. I also focus on my new mission: helping professional musicians reduce injuries and restore calm through yoga, breathwork and meditation.
Body Awareness = The Key
Musicians are often taught to push through pain, but ignoring the body leads to tension, injuries and burnout. I believe that developing body awareness is the key to sustained well-being and freedom in your musical life. When you learn to recognize the signals your body gives you before something goes wrong, you can adjust and prevent damage.
Marije Korenromp
Marije has a pleasant and calm teaching style, with a soothing voice that’s easy to listen to. Before and after the live online classes, there is space for personal questions. Both the physical and mental aspects of yoga and meditation are addressed, with a focus on the needs of musicians. Because Marije understands what it means to rely on your body while making music, the exercises are purposeful and constructive.
